Dr. Alec Engebretson of the Doane College Department of Information Science and Technology hosted a ROBOlympics event as part of the Midwest Institute for International Studies Adventure Zone from Monday, June 27, 2011 to Friday, July 1, 2011. The Adventure Zone brings middle school students from Japan to the United States in order for them to experience a bit of our culture. The ROBOlympics was one of several courses with both Japanese and United States students enrolled.  This year’s Adventure Zone included friends from Senshu University, Matsudo Junior High School in Matsudo, Chiba, Japan.

Check out the information below for more details on this event, the students who participated in the event, and the final results.

The Events

Event 1: Roller ‘Bot Derby

For this event, teams built and programmed a 'bot to go head-to-head against another 'bot in a yacht race, 'bot style.

The rules of the event were as follows:

  1. This was a single-elimination tournament. Teams were seeded based on the results of a round robin trial where each team raced each of the other teams.

  2. All 'bots had to complete a physical to ensure they met the size restriction.

  3. Robots started at the start/finish line of the yacht course facing opposite directions. A flip of a coin determined which direction the 'bot traveled.

  4. The first 'bot to complete one lap in the proper direction and cross the finish line won.  If neither 'bot finished, the 'bot that went the farthest won.

  5. A 'bot could interfere with the other 'bot (and, in fact, it was encouraged!). Types of interference include a rotating arm, dropping obstacles, presssing the kill switch, etc.

  6. Bots must have a switch located at the highest point on the robot. If pressed, this switch should automatically shut down the bot.

Event 2: Sumo 'Bot Wrestling

For this event, teams built and programmed a 'bot to Sumo wrestle, 'bot style.

The rules of the event were as follows:

1.      This was a single-elimination tournament. Teams were seeded based on the results of a round robin trial where each team raced each of the other teams. In the round robin, each bot was allowed to face off against every other bot.

2.      All 'bots had to complete a physical to ensure they met the size restriction and that both the touch sensor and light sensor worked and were placed appropriately on the 'bot.

3.      A 'bot won if the other 'bot's light sensor detected blue (it was pushed out of the ring), the other 'bot's touch sensor was pressed, or if the other 'bot was somehow disabled (such as flipped over)

4.   'Bots must exit a garage, turn 90 degrees, and move forward to enter the ring.

Test Event: Treasure Hunt

For this event, teams built and programmed a robot to locate "X marks the spot" while navigating obstacles on a gameboard. This is a timed event. The team that reaches the X quickest wins.

The rules of the event were as follows:

     1.  Robots must locate the black X on the gameboard with the light sensor.

     2.  Upon reaching the X, robots much shut down on the spot.
